Varsity boysâ basketball defeated division rival Loyola on the road 86-81, avenging last seasonâs loss, while improving to 3-0 in league play. The Wolverines took control of the game early, jumping out to a 29-14 lead after one quarter of play, but had to withstand several comeback attempts from their league archrival.
Forwards Erik Swoope â10 and Damiene Cain â11 helped secure the inside for the Wolverines, scoring 11 and 10 points respectively; however it was guard Austin Kelly â10 who led the squad to victory. Kelly put up 29 points to go along with 3 assists, 4 steals, and only one turnover while hitting critical free throws down the stretch. Despite the impressive victory, Kelly is trying to remain focused to ensure the team avoids last seasonâs collapse.
âThis is a good win, beating on the Loyola on the road is definitely important and a big step, but itâs still really early in the year,â Kelly said. âWe are playing well as a team, but we have a long way to go so we just have to keep progressing and not look too far ahead.â
