Friday night could have been the end of 13 varsity football
playersâ high school football careers. Friday night could have been the last
time those players helped score touchdowns, convert field goals, and shut down
opposing offenses for the Harvard-Westlake Wolverines. Friday night was Senior
Night, and the team needed to win in order to make the playoffs and extend its
season for at least one more game.
The Wolverines avoided spoiling Senior Night, during which
the football players and 2 senior cheerleaders were honored, by soundly
defeating Bishop St. Montgomery 37-2 and securing a CIF playoff spot in the
process.
âLetâs get it going right now,â a coach said to the players before
the start of the game.Â
And âget it goingâ they did. The team scored on its first
drive of the game on a 56 touchdown pass from Max Heltzer â11 to Jackson
Liguori â10 and took a 24-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the team built its lead to 31-0 before
finally surrendering a safety to put Bishop St. Montgomery on the board. Oliver
Lowry â10, playing quarterback, ran into the left side of the end zone to put
the finishing touches on the win with under a minute remaining in the game. The
ensuing extra point was blocked.
