One hundred forty-six upper school students failed to complete their community service requirement by the May 2 deadline, Head of Community Council Gaby Cohen ’11 said. Among the 146 were 44 seniors, 58 juniors and 44 sophomores. Since March 16, 401 students have completed their service.
The Community Council hosted four events this past weekend: packing and handing out lunches to the homeless at the Ocean Park Community Center, making care packages for soldiers with Operation Gratitude, helping the Scene Monkeys at Activities for Retarded Children and a gardening event at LA Family Housing. All four events were filled to their maximum capacity, according to an email sent to students from the Community Council. About 100 students attended the Operation Gratitude event on Saturday, Head of Community Council Daniel Rothberg ’11 said.
As a punishment for not completing the service requirement before the deadline, students will have to perform additional outreach hours. Additionally, seniors who do not complete their service by graduation will not officially matriculate and their transcript will not be sent to colleges. Sophomores and juniors will be barred from registering for the 2011-2012 school year until their service is complete.
