Father J. Young officiated at the wedding of upper school dance teacher Katie Lowry- Chang ’99 and Will Chang ’97, Aug. 4.
Lowry-Chang first met her husband in seventh grade.
She was best friends with his sister and saw him very often through middle and high school.
Chang accompied Lowry-Chang to her senior prom.
“He was two years older than me, so he was in college, but I didn’t have a date, so my friend said her brother would take me as a favor,” Lowry Chang said. “We had a great time.”
After prom they went their separate ways but later reconnected through a friend.
They dated for two years before Chang proposed in November.
Bridesmaids Melody Chang Martin ’99 and Danielle Evans ’99 as well as many other Harvard-Westlake alumni were present at the ceremony.
Young has been officiating at weddings for about 25 years and has performed weddings for Harvard-Westlake alumni for the past 15 years.
Lowry-Chang asked him to be in the wedding earlier in the summer over lunch.
“I wanted someone who had a connection to both of us and he was the perfect person,” Lowry-Chang said. “He became the chaplain when Will was a senior and was at the upper school when I attended. We had that connection, we and now we are colleagues as well.”
Young was pleased to participate.
“It was a beachside wedding at Santa Monica and was quite lovely,” Young said. “I love doing weddings for couples that I know.”
