Rock climber Charlie Andrews-Jubelt ’13, won first place in the Southern California Regional Championships on Saturday, Dec. 8.
This regional competition is a bouldering only competition and is the qualifying round for the invitational post-season rock climbing competitions. To qualify for it, climbers had to have participated in at least two other local competitions earlier this fall.
Andrews-Jubelt competed as part of a team known as Team Anonymous from a local rock climbing gym, Rockreation, where he helps coach. Each member of the team won in his or her respective age categories, in Andrews-Jubelt’s case, the Junior (18-19) category.
“It’s always important to start the season off strong, and I did that today, but this is just the beginning. Winning felt really good, and I thought I competed very well on some of the challenging routes they set for us, but the important thing is that I qualified for Divisionals and I’m moving on to bigger and more competitive events. I always plan my training schedule to peak at Nationals, not Regionals, but I’m off to a good start,” Andrews-Jubelt said.
