Five track and field athletes took home eight total titles after Mission League Finals on May 3, including three titles won by Lizzy Thomas ’14.
Thomas outsped competitors in all three of her events, winning the girls’ 800, 1600, and 3200 meter races.
“I can’t say I was expecting to win all three events,” Thomas said. “I was really hoping to qualify for CIF in all three. To qualify for CIF, you have to make top three in the event, so I just wanted to do that in my events.”
Along with victories in track, the girls also won on the field end. Zita Biosah ’14 won the girls’ discus throw, Courtney Corrin ’16 won the long jump and triple jump, while Alex Florent ’15 won the girls’ high jump. Corrin’s 20-6.5 long jump set the second-highest freshman long jump in the state – Corrin holds the number one spot as well, with a jump of 20-11.
On the boys’ side, Ben Gaylord ’15 won the pole-vault event with a 15-foot vault.
The track and field teams will next compete in CIF preliminaries on May 11, before heading to CIF Finals and CIF Masters on May 18 and 24 respectively, should they qualify.
