The school’s épée and saber fencing teams competed at Brentwood School in a Southern California Fencing League Tournament on Oct. 22. The team competed against schools from the Southern California Scholastic Fencing League, with several players placing within the top five. Varsity épée fencers Sullivan Kim ’26 and Edward Ward ’25 placed first and second respectively.
Fencing Program Head Erika Velarde said she was pleased with the tournament outcome.
“All the kids from Middle School to Upper School did a fantastic job,” Velarde said. “I’m very happy with the results.”
This year, Velarde said she has been implementing new drills into fencing’s training repertoire.
“This year we are adding more strength and conditioning,” Velarde said. “We did a lot of drills this trimester and we had very good results. We are going to try to improve this trimester [by adding] Flèches, lunges and more tactical drills.”
The team is scheduled to compete in a novice tournament at Le Lycée Français of Los Angeles on Dec. 2.
