The Global Affairs Society partnered with the Los Angeles World Affairs Council and Town Hall (LAWACTH) to attend a speaker event with Los Angeles (LA) Mayor Karen Bass at the Ebell Theatre on May 28. The club, co-led by Assistant News Editor Nathan Wang ’25 and Assistant Features Editor Alex Dinh ’25, joined other high schools and adults to hear about LA’s role in the international market.

Dinh said the event was successful, despite the challenges faced during its organization.

“Although planning and coordinating the event was challenging and required a lot of effort, it was a gratifying experience,” Dinh said. “Our members greatly enjoyed hearing from Mayor Bass and gained valuable insights from the event. I particularly appreciated her focus on improving our city and clean energy in preparation for the World Cup in 2026 and the Olympics in 2028.”

Global Affairs Society member Avery Kim ’25 said the event was an introduction to Bass and her policies for him.

“I thought it was a good experience because I never actually heard the mayor speak, and I didn’t previously know her opinions,” Kim said. “It was nice to get that introduction to her. She was very well-spoken and levelheaded which is very much needed nowadays.”

Wang said he is excited about the future of the Global Affairs Society.

“This is the second year of Global Affairs Society, and I can say with a lot of certainty that we are progressing as a club with every meeting and every event,” Wang said. “This event with Karen Bass was one of the most prominent ones we hosted and the interest for the event was high. Global Affairs Club has a bright future ahead.”
