After starting their third quarterback in as many weeks, the Wolverines had no problem defeating Granada Hills Charter High School 45-14.
With Marshal Cohen ’16 ruled out for the season with a re-torn ACL, Noah Rothman ’16 was forced into the starting quarterback role, and ended up torching the Highlanders’ defense, throwing for 107 yards and three touchdown passes.
“To be honest, we didn’t play as well as we could have,” Rothman said. “We have a lot of room to improve and I am looking forward to getting better as the season goes on.”
While Head Coach Scot Ruggles decided to start Jake Grode ’19 last week against Jefferson due to a shoulder injury Rothman was nursing, both quarterbacks ended up playing against Granada Hills.
After forcing the Highlanders to punt to begin the game, the Wolverines started their opening drive with a touchdown, highlighted by a 49-yard pass from Rothman to Cam Jones ’18.
The Wolverines ended up scoring two more touchdowns on a Phil Thompson ’16 run and an Alex Barnum ’16 63-yard reception before halftime.
Jones finished the night with 57 yards receiving and two touchdown catches along with a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown on a Highlanders’ screen pass.
Thomas Glover ’18, who saw some work as a wildcat quarterback, had touchdown runs of 28 and 75 yards. He also had a 74-yard scamper to get the Wolverines into the red zone on the team’s final possession of the game.
“I just had to make something amazing happen tonight, I just made plays when I needed to,” Glover said. “We need to come together as a team and pressure the other teams in order to keep them to zero points each week.”
The Wolverines will carry an overall record of 2-1 into their first road game next Friday at Taft High School at 7 p.m.
