The varsity boys basketball team defeated Temecula Valley High School 96-53 in their first game of the season, in a non-league game Nov. 19. Guard Joe Sterling ’26, a new transfer to the school as a starter from Crespi, led the team with 25 points and went seven for 10 in three-pointers. Forward Nik Khamenia ’25 and Guard Amir Jones ’26 both added 19 points.
The team initially struggled with turnovers due to several sloppy passes. Head Coach David Rebibo said moving forward, the team looks to improve their defensive execution.
“I thought we played with nervous energy,” Rebibo said. “We moved the ball, we shared the ball, we had a lot of assists, but I think defensively, we lacked a little discipline and didn’t execute the way we should have.”
Guard Amir Jones ’26 said his shooting in the mid-range and pace of fastbreaks helped create plays and opportunities during the game.
“I feel like my mid-range [shots] and running the floor on fastbreaks both opened up the game for me and allowed me to get a feel for the game,” Jones said. “Going forward I just have to remember these things earlier on to help open up my game and make it easier for myself and my team.”
Moving into the team’s next games, Rebibo said the team has room for improvement and will continue to develop over the course of the season.
“We’ve got great leadership [and] we understand who and what we need to do,” Rebibo said. “Right now, it’s just execution, and that’ll come with time as we continue to evolve, learn and get healthy.”
The team’s next game is against La Salle High School in the Westside Tip-Off Showcase at Westchester High School on Nov. 20.
