The National English Honors Society (NEHS) is holding a book drive through Dec. 20 to support The Book Truck. The Book Truck is a nonprofit organization that provides books to teens from underserved communities in Los Angeles.
NEHS placed collection bins in Chalmers East, Mudd Library and the lobby of Rugby Hall. The drive is collecting books in the young adult genre.
NEHS is partnering with the middle school Community Service Club for the drive. The middle school donations will support Re-Book It, a branch of The Last Bookstore that supplies low-cost books and raises funds for local libraries, charities, hospitals and schools.
NEHS co-president Ethan Chen ’26 said he encourages students to participate in the drive so the donated books can have a broader impact on the community.
“Books are so great that they shouldn’t be hoarded in private libraries,” Chen said. “I love the idea of sharing books. Instead of a singular benefit, books would be for the benefit of so many people.”
Sophia Wong ’27, who worked to connect the Upper School and Middle School initiatives, said the book drive could help address social issues outside of the school.
“Reading and literacy are fundamental to preventing social issues,” Wong said. “This book drive can bring books to thousands of kids in Los Angeles and change their lives.”
Talia Landres ’28, a leader of the middle school Community Service Club, said she values the book drive because it could help the community in several ways.
“The book drive is important because it addresses multiple issues at once, reducing waste, promoting literacy and supporting local charities,” Landres said. “I’m excited to watch the pile [of books] grow and to know that each book will find a new home.”
