The Black Leadership Awareness and Culture Club (BLACC) collaborated with the Gender and Sexuality Awareness (GSA) Club to host the fifth annual BLACC Out Dance in Chalmers East on Feb. 22. The dance was open to all grades, and the clubs collaborated to plan the layout of the dance and purchase games and decorations, which were also used the night before during GSA’s Violet Disco.
BLACC Leader Tiffany Armour ’25 said the dance was fun because she got to connect with other members of the community.
“[My favorite memory was] just seeing everyone light up and get super happy,” Armour said. “That was just fun like meeting new people and seeing old friends. But I thought the DJ, Alexander Hudlin [’26], did a really great job when he played 24 Karat Magic. I think that was definitely the highlight for me because everyone was getting super turned up and it was just fun because everyone knew the song. The adults were also dancing, and so that was just a great moment of connection.”
Sophomore Prefect Jasiri Johnson ’27 said he enjoyed meeting others throughout the dance.
“My favorite memory throughout the night was being able to see friends across campuses as well as people from other schools,” Johnson said.
BLACC Member Kara Horacek ’27 said she attended the dance because it fostered a sense of community.
“Dances like these tend to foster a sense of belonging within marginalized communities that I don’t get to feel at a normal full school dance,” Horacek said. “I like being out and about around groups of people who look like me, think like me and understand the world like me. Plus, they play better music. But overall, it was a chance to feel seen and have fun with friends.”
