Zach Ansell ’22, along with partner Jem Burch, won the 15th annual North American School Scrabble Championship on April 23 after defeating dozens of teams.
In recognition of their successes against the more than 150 Scrabble players aged nine to 18 that participated in the competition, the team, which is also known as Random Word Generator, was awarded $10,000.
The pair played eight tournament rounds throughout the weekend, winning their final round 374-349. The tournament was held by Hasbro Gaming and officiated by Mindsports International.
Both Ansell and Burch are former School Scrabble champions.
“Zach has been playing competitive Scrabble since he was eight years old, mostly against adults,” Debra Ansell said in an email. “He won this tournament previously in 2015, with a different partner.”
