Harvard-Westlake purchased Weddington Golf & Tennis with plans to build a Community Athletics Center and put parking structure plans on hold, President Rick Commons announced in an email to the school community Monday.
The 16-acre property located less than a mile from the upper school campus between Whitsett Avenue and the LA River currently includes a nine-hole golf course, driving range and 16 tennis courts. The new athletics center will be open to students and the greater Studio City community.
With this purchase, Harvard-Westlake will re-evaluate the current plans for the Parking, Safety & Athletic Improvement Project after receiving complaints from Studio City residents. Commons said the school will explore other options for additional parking, such as adding parking spots on the main campus.
Commons outlined the key principles of the Community Athletics Center project and said it will be a transparent and thoughtful process. He said the school will reach out to neighbors for their input, allow public access to portions of the athletics center, make improvements to the property next to the LA River trail and preserve as much open space of the property as possible.
“I hope you join me in celebrating the next chapter in the history of Harvard-Westlake and our long-term commitment to Studio City and the City of Los Angeles,” Commons said in the email.
