Boys’ golf finished its season after a consistent year of high placement in league with an overall record of 7-2.
The boys’ golf team finished seventh overall in the CIF Southern Section playoffs. In the CIF tournament May 14 at Central Lakewood Golf Course, co-Captain Chase Rosenblatt ’18 shot a 75, co-Captain Dylan Wan ’18 shot a 76, Alex Hong ’19 shot a 77, Michael Gaven ’19 shot a 81, Tammer Bagdasarian ’20 shot a 86, and Gray Toomey ’18 shot a 90. As a team they shot a total of 395.
Wan said this was a good end to his Wolverine golf career. He spoke about the team’s finish in playoffs this year.
“I feel great about my CIF finish,” Wan said. “Our top players all shot great rounds and we all had fun in our very last school match.”
In their most recent Mission League Tournament (#3) on May 2, the Wolverines were second to Loyola, securing their overall placement of second place in the Mission League. The team takes its second place finish for the second year in row.
“The other teams in our league we played well this season, but not as well as they used to,” Rosenblatt said. “There wasn’t much age in the teams. A lot of the seniors graduated last year so it left many teams very scattered. For us, I hope the rising seniors can step up and lead the team next year so we can finish better than we did this year.”
After playing six years of golf as a Wolverine, Wan said this past season has meant a lot to him.
“This was my last year playing and it meant a lot to me,” Wan said. “I’ve grown a lot as a golfer since joining the team in seventh grade. Over the time I’ve got to learn a lot about my teammates and coach. We played together, laughed together, grinded together and grew together.”
Underclassmen have said they are sad to see their seniors leave, but enjoyed getting to know everyone this season.
“This season was really about developing relationships,” Clay Skaggs ‘20 said. “Although golf is an individual sport, the team bonded extremely well and we are all very close. The team dynamic is truly amazing.”
Although they were not victorious in CIFs, players said they were satisfied with their finish and the season as a whole, and program head Tony Kewal agreed.
“They [the golfers] have had a great time,” Kewal said. “They don’t hesitate to talk and share their stories. To me that is success. When they look back they can speak about the memories they had, how funny it was sometimes, how intense a match was. They can laugh about it.”
With a big departing senior class, including some of their top golfers, Skaggs said he is looking forward to building with a younger team next season.
“Next season I hope we can create an environment similar to this year’s,” Skaggs said. “I think it is really important to give the younger golfers a shot to play in tournaments so we can build up our base for future seasons. I don’t think we are going to win as much next year so our main goal is to create a bright future for the program.”
