While the rest of the teamâs roster wonât be set until today, Ally Young â07, now in her fourth year on varsity and last yearâs MVP, will return as the girlsâ varsity golf team captain.
Young has earned third place overall in Mission League for the past two seasons and is accompanied by Nicole Scher â07, the only other senior on the team.
âItâs going to be hard because we have a young team,â Young said. âThere are a lot of freshmen and sophomores.â
âI hope they will be okay because they donât really play in competitions outside of school.â
Although the girlsâ varsity golf team finished with a 2-8 record last year, Coach Megan Phillips is optimistic for the upcoming season.
The team, led by Phillips and Assistant Coach Kanwaljit Kochar, will kick off the season in a Sept. 19 match against Alemany, the first match of their planned ten-match season.
âI am excited for the season as we have a combination of strong returning players and new players trying out for varsity for the first time,â Phillips said.
âI am confident that both individuals and the team as a unit will rise to the physical and mental challenges that our competition offers.â
Aside from Alemany, other Mission League competition includes a two-match set against Notre Dame, whom Phillips believes will be the toughest opponent.
Over the summer, players prepared for the approaching season by attending golf camps across the country.
Young participated in golf tournaments in California and Arizona during the postseason.
It will be difficult for the team to come back from last seasonâs losing record, Scher said
âOur team isnât as solid as it used to be, but I think we can pull through it,â she said.
