After giving up a 14 point lead in the second half, the Wolverines were able to drive down the field in 32 seconds to set up a 36-yard field goal for kicker Brian Hentschel ’08. Hentschel sent the kick sailing through the uprights and a would be disappointing loss suddenly became a thrilling 31-29 victory over the Cathedral Phantoms.
The Wolverines were up 28-21 with six minutes left in the fourth quarter and the Phantoms had a second down and 40. Phantoms’ quarterback Raymond Flores then found Prentice Gill for a 62-yard gain and the Phantoms were in business.
Randall Carrol then scored on a four-yard run to bring the Phantoms within one. Looking for the critical Del Rey League victory, Cathedral coach Kevin Pearson decided to go for the two-point counversion. Pearson called a reverse to Carrol who broke two tackles to put the Phantoms ahead 29-28.
On the ensuing kickoff, Paul Royster ’08 returned the kick to the Cathedral 43-yard line, and after a nine-yard pass and a 15-yard Tehron O’Neal ’09 run, Hentschel booted in the winning kick. With the victory, the Wolverines moved to 1-1 in Del Rey League play.
The Wolverines will face undefeated league leader Serra at Ted Slavin Field next Saturday.Â
