In front of packed stands, the Wolverines football team crushed St. Bernard 37-0 to begin Del Rey League play last Friday. The game was the climax of the dayâs Homecoming festivities, during which all four of the participatory Wolverines teams defeated their opponents.
The Wolverinesâ offense picked up towards the end of the first half, scoring two touchdowns in the final two minutes of the first half to increase their lead to 20 at halftime. Jackson Ligouri â10 reeled in the first touchdown after the Wolverines blocked a Viking punt, and TeRhon OâNeal punched the ball into the endzone on a 1-yard run with 46 seconds remaining in the half. Receiver Corey Vann â09 was accountable for two more touchdown receptions in the second half.
The Wolverines defense effectively shut down the Viking offense, who only gained five first downs and accumulated 108 yards. Nicky Firestone â11 intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter that enabled Will Oliver â11 to kick a field goal for the final score of the game.
The loss gives the Vikings a record of 1-5, their only victory coming from a home match against Brentwood.
The Wolverines continue league play with their next match against the undefeated Serra squad next Friday.
