Following an 82-64 victory over the AUBD Tiger Sharks on Wednesday, the boys’ varsity basketball team will face league rival Loyola in the Torrance Tournament semifinals on Nov. 30.
In their second straight double digit win, Mike Sheng ’14 led the team in scoring with 24 points, followed by Derick Newton ’14 with 23. While he led the team in scoring against the Tiger Sharks, Sheng believes it was the team’s play on the opposite end of the court that has helped them reach 2-0 on the season.
“We’re playing great defense,” Sheng said. “Our press this year is working. We’re getting a lot of steals, a lot of fast break points, so I think that’s a key to our success.”
The boys will vie for a spot in the finals of the tournament at Torrance High School against Loyola, against whom the team lost both games last season, including a 77-74 loss that came down to the wire on Feb. 3.
“There’s not any bad blood right now [between the teams], but when we start playing there definitely will be,” Sheng said.
