In the its last game before beginning official league play, the boys’ varsity basketball team defeated arch-rival Loyola 82-72 on Saturday to take third in the MaxPreps Holiday Classic.
Forward Derick Newton ’14 led the Wolverines in scoring with 30 points, followed by forward Clinton Hooks ’13 with 23.
The victory comes as payback for the Wolverines, who lost to the Cubs 80-61 in the teams’ first meeting of the season in the semifinals of the Torrance Tournament. The rivals will meet two more times during the regular season, with the next meeting at Occidental College on Jan. 16.
The Wolverines are now 9-3 on the season, and will begin league play on Jan. 4 at Crespi, followed by a home game vs. Notre Dame on Jan. 7.
