In the boys’ varsity basketball team’s third meeting of the season with arch-rival Loyola and first in league play on Wednesday, the Wolverines defeated the Cubs 61-59.
Guard Mike Sheng ’14 came up big for the Wolverines, particularly in the absence of top scorer Derick Newton ’14, as he was the team’s highest scorer with a season-high 27 points. Alex Copeland ’15 was the team’s second leading scorer with 17 points.
The victory is the team’s second straight without Newton, who injured his shoulder on Jan. 9 against Chaminade. Newton is set to return in two weeks, which is just in time for the Wolverines’ second league matchup against the Cubs on Feb. 4.
The team is now 13-5 on the season with a 4-2 league record and a 2-1 record against Loyola. They’ll next face Crespi at home on Jan. 21 before heading to Notre Dame on Jan. 25.
