Derick Newton ’14 crowned his return to the boys’ varsity basketball team lineup with 21 points in the Wolverines’ 73-60 win over Laguna Beach on Friday, which advances the team to the third round of CIF Playoffs.
Newton, who leads the Wolverines in scoring, suffered a shoulder injury on Jan. 9 against Chaminade and was forced to miss 11 games, including the rest of the regular season.
The Wolverines took the lead in the first quarter and never gave it up, stretching the lead to 20 at one point.
The team’s 13 point win in the second round of CIF Playoffs comes after a 31 point victory in the first round against Templeton. The Wolverines will look to continue their momentum in the third round on Feb. 19 at home against Bishop Montgomery.
