In one of its biggest losses in recent history, the boys’ varsity basketball team suffered an 80-39 defeat at the hands of longtime foe Loyola Friday as the Wolverine-Cub rivalry played out in Taper Gymnasium for the first time since 2011.
The Wolverines struggled to mount any sort of offensive attack against the Cubs, tallying 18 points by halftime. Meanwhile, the Cubs, ranked top five in both the state and the country, scored in the paint often and were all over the offensive glass, logging 48 at the half. Derick Newton ’14 led the Wolverines in scoring with 20 points.
Friday’s loss to the Cubs is the team’s third straight defeat, moving it to 9-10 overall and 2-4 in league. The Wolverines, who had defeated the Cubs 81-74 in their last meeting at Taper three years ago, will look to break their losing skid tomorrow against Sierra Canyon.
