The Wolverines’ season came to an end following a 68-42 loss to La Serna in the second round of the CIF-SS playoffs. The team finished with an overall record of 8-4 and 4-1 in the Angelus League.
The game marked the team’s second consecutive playoff appearance.
The top-seeded Lancers got off to a good start and never looked back. They began the game with three straight rushing touchdowns in the first quarter to take a 19-0 lead.
However, the Wolverines did not let the Lancers’ big early lead deter them from doing what they do best, which is coming back from a seemingly insurmountable deficit.
Noah Rothman ’16 threw his first of four touchdowns to Cameron Jones ’18 to cut the Lancers lead to 12.
However, La Serna quickly responded with their fourth rushing touchdown of the first half.
On the Wolverines’ next drive, the squad moved the ball all the way down to the La Serna 25 but turned the ball over on downs after a botched hook-and-ladder and a dropped pass on fourth down.
The Lancers scored twice more before the end of the half before Rothman connected with Jones on a hail mary at the end of the second quarter to make the score 33-14 in favor of La Serna.
During the third quarter, Rothman hit Alex Barnum ’16 on a deep pass to cut the La Serna lead back to two touchdowns.
The Lancers scored yet again on a misdirection running play which gave the Wolverines fits all night.
La Serna ended up scoring four more touchdowns, led by running back Anthony Garcia’s ’16 six touchdown runs and 326 yards.
Rothman ended the night with 425 yards passing, four touchdown passes and one rushing touchdown. However, his valiant effort was not enough to lead the Wolverines to the CIF-SS semifinals.
The Wolverines ended up losing 68-42, ending their season one round farther in the playoffs than the team made last season.
