Two members of the Harvard-Westlake Junior State of America club will run for regional office positions within the organization.
Lucy Kim ’19 and Eleanor Halloran ’18 declared their candidacy during the Los Angeles Region Winter Congress Feb. 20-21 for Los Angeles Region Senator and Mayor, respectively.
Senators represent their region on the JSA State Senate, which creates debate topics and JSA rules. One of the mayors’ duties is to lead each region and organize JSA conferences.
“I can do everything the mayor is required to do,” Vice President of Harvard-Westlake’s JSA chapter Halloran said. “I can do it well, I can bring new ideas to it and I can do it with the input of the people of JSA.”
Voting will occur during Spring Congress at the LAX Hilton April 8-10 by all those attending from Angeles Region.
“Thus far, I’ve learned much about the importance of establishing yourself as an individual early on and ascertaining that your speeches reflect who you are and what you want to do as an elected candidate,” Kim said.
Those who run for general office positions in the organization must campaign for votes by participating in debates, securing endorsements from JSA office holders, connecting with voters through social media and creating promotional material, Halloran said.
“I think it’ll help [the Harvard-Westlake JSA chapter] because it’ll show that HW JSAers are dedicated and actually like the club,” Halloran said.
JSA members hosted a voter registration drive Feb. 26 on the quad and in front of Taper Gym from 2:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in an attempt to get more students to vote in the upcoming JSA election.
“It was really great to see people signing up to vote, especially in a time when less than a fifth of young people voted in the last election,” Halloran said.
