Lucas Giolito ’12, former varsity baseball player, made his Major League Baseball debut pitching for the Washington Nationals against the New York Mets at Nationals Park June 28.
Giolito, ranked by MLB.com as the top prospect in the Nationals farm system, recorded his first career strikeout against Mets shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera in the first inning, In his first career at bat in the bottom of the second he grounded out to second base.
Giolito finished with a final stat line of four innings pitched with one strikeout, and he allowed one hit and two walks. He needed 45 pitches to make it through the fourth inning, but his outing was cut short by an hour-long rain delay. When he departed from the game the Nationals held a 1-0 lead and won by a final score of 5-0.
Athletic Director Matt LaCour, Giolito’s Harvard-Westlake coach, attended the game.
