The boys’ water polo team beat Loyola High School 11-9 in an overtime away game on Wednesday night establishing the Wolverines as Mission League Champions.
The squad was up by one goal with less than a minute left in the fourth quarter when the Cubs called a timeout. The play that Loyola ran resulted in a tip in goal that tied the game up, sending it to overtime.
The Wolverines came out on top winning the game 11-9. Attacker Ethan Shipman ’20 scored six of the eleven goals for the team. Fellow attacker Alexandru Bucur ’19 expressed his feelings on winning Mission League.
“Last night was by far my most memorable experience so far through my four years on the team,” Bucur said. “We had an incredible fan base between the girls’ water polo team and parents, which brought an amazing amount of energy to the pool deck. Also, playing in a hostile environment versus our league rival was nerve-racking but coming out on top gave our team even more confidence heading into CIF playoffs next week.
The team plays in the first round of CIF next week at home, and according to Bucur, the team is hoping for another huge fan base.
