The baseball team opened the season with an 11-3 defeat of Mira Costa High School tonight.

Pitcher Tyler Ganus ’20 started for the Wolverines, the first start of his career. After the game, Ganus said he was honored to get the nod on opening night.  

“I’m grateful to have had the experience,” Ganus said. “It was super special to open it up at home with my boys.”

Ganus allowed three runs in his two and ⅓ innings pitched. Those are the only three runs Mustangs would score for the rest of the contest. The game was close until the bottom of the fourth inning, when the Wolverines scored four runs to extend a 4-3 lead to a larger 8-3 lead. They wouldn’t stop there, adding three more in the fifth to increase their total to 11, a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. 

Ganus said the Wolverine offense was instrumental in turning the tide for the team.

“Even though we were down early, our offense answered back and got the momentum on our side,” Ganus said. “It was great to be thrown into the fire in the first game of the season. I’m proud of how we picked each other up.”

With an eight-run Wolverine lead, the game was called with one out in the bottom of the sixth due to darkness. In its next game, the team takes on Martin Luther King High School on Feb. 22 as part of the ELKs tournament.
