The boys’ water polo team came into its matchup against Mater Dei knowing a win would break the Monarch’s 77-match win streak and upset the top-ranked team in the nation.
The Wolverines were able to keep the game close in the first quarter, only down 4-2, but Mater Dei extended its lead and won 15-6.
“We had the team with the best chance of beating Mater Dei, and we had come close to them in previous games. It was 9-11 going into the fourth quarter against them in the Santa Barbara tournament,” center guard Warren Snyder ’14 said. “We went into the game knowing it was going to be a battle, knowing it was going to be a one goal game, and it was just a tough loss.”
The Wolverines had beaten Beckman in a Division I wild card game and El Toro in the first round earlier last week before losing to Mater Dei Saturday.
“We had a very successful season and we are not going to let the Mater Dei game take away from our entire season,” Snyder said.
The team returns all of its starters including Snyder heading into next season.
