Baseball wins season opener against Foothill High School
February 13, 2022
The baseball team defeated Foothill 5-4 in its season opener at O’Malley Family Field on Feb. 12. In its previous season, the team had a 29-4 overall record and won the CIF-SS Division I Championship.
Pitcher Tommy Bridges ’24 pitched five innings and designated hitter Alex Shane ’22 pitched two. The players scored five runs by the end of the fourth inning: Bridges scored two runs, while Shane had two runs batted in (RBIs) and first baseman Niko Price ’22 had one RBI.
Shortstop Kai Caranto ’23, who went 1-2 at bat, said he sees the start of the season as an opportunity to win more games with his team.
“We are all excited about getting a chance to win another CIF championship,” Caranto said. “The team we have is an amazing group of players that have endless capabilities. This year’s competition has got loads of talent that will make it an exciting season. Being able to carry on this winning tradition that Harvard-Westlake has gained will be an incredible accomplishment.”
Shortstop and second basemen Julian Medina ’22 said baseball is about trusting one’s teammates and being there for them through the ups and downs.
“I think what made our team last year so great was how close [we were] and how much faith we had in one another,” Medina said. “Despite some early injuries to some valuable players on our team, I think this team has everything needed to recreate the success we had last year.”
Shane said the team still has the talent to dominate the league like they did last season.
“Our team has a great mix of veteran returners and also some key new players,” Shane said. “We are a super tight-knit group, and if we play up to our expectations we will be very hard to beat.”
The Wolverines will face Yucaipa High School in their next match at J Serra High School on Feb. 16.
