The boys’ water polo team lost 9-7 to JSerra Catholic High School in a non-league away game Sept. 7. The team moved to a total record of 3-1 with a league record of 3-0.

Water Polo Program Head Jack Grover said in an interview for Coach’s Corner that the team would benefit from improving its offensive attack.

“We started a little bit slow,” Grover said. “Once we earned a bunch of opportunities later down the stretch, we just weren’t super crisp on [our] six on five [attack], which is typically one of our strongest phases of the game.”

Grover said the cooperation of team members in fulfilling their respective duties brought a higher level of energy to the match.

“This year, we decided to put an emphasis on everyone embracing whatever their role is in that game,” Grover said. “I think in doing so, more people were ready to enter the game when it became their time. And your role doesn’t necessarily mean in the water. The energy on the bench brought by [Benjamin Boateng ’25] and [Andre Touloumian ’24] was contagious. There wasn’t one second that our team didn’t believe that we could win that game.”

Grover said the team’s strong foundation will be critical to build off of early in the season.

“This team has a lot of chemistry and the trust is really coming along,” Grover said. “If you think about last year when a new coach came in a couple of months before the season, we really started to play our best water polo at the end. Now, we have an opportunity to start playing our way to find our identity before the season ends and it’s too late.”

The team will face Newport Harbor High School at home Sept. 9.
