The boys’ basketball team fell to Sierra Canyon in Chatsworth on Friday night, losing two straight games for the first time since the 2021 season.

After losing to Notre Dame at home Wednesday night, the Wolverines were defeated by the Blazers 74-68, falling to third place in the Mission League. Sierra Canyon senior guard Justin Pippen, son of NBA legend Scottie Pippen, led the Blazers in scoring with 24 points, including six threes. Senior guard Trent Perry ’24 led the team in scoring with 23 points, followed by junior forward Nik Khamenia ’25 with 21 points. The Wolverines drop to an overall record of 20-3 with a league record of 3-2.

Although the team trailed Sierra Canyon the entire first quarter, the squad was able to gain momentum in the second, going on a 12-2 run to take the lead. The Wolverines led the Blazers 36-31 at the half, with 14 first-half points from Khamenia.

The third quarter was relatively even between the two teams, but was highlighted by a final-second slam by senior guard Robert Hinton ’24, who spun around the defender and finished at the rim to bring the team up 54-50 with one quarter left to play.

The Wolverines were able to extend their lead to eight points in the fourth quarter with five minutes remaining, forcing a timeout from Sierra Canyon. However, they were unable to score in the next four minutes while allowing the Blazers to score 18 unanswered points, who erased the deficit and established a 10-point lead of their own with only a minute left to play.

The Blazers would win the game 74-68, staying tied in first place with Notre Dame in the Mission League standings with a league record of 5-0. The Wolverines currently sit in third place with a record of 3-2, and look to bounce back next week against Chaminade on Wednesday and St. Francis on Friday.
