Tonight’s home football game will take place at 7:30 p.m. despite a power outage that occurred on campus, Athletic Director Matt LaCour said. LaCour said if high temperatures persist, the game will be postponed another 30 minutes from its original time, 7 p.m., or until temperatures cool down. Tonight’s temperature is forecasted to be under 100 degrees Fahrenheit around 7.p.m., according to weather forecasts.
Several buildings lost power at approximately 2:30 p.m. on the south side of campus, including Mudd Library, Seaver Hall and Taper Gym. The school’s power is supplied by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), which reported several outages in the Studio City area. The school’s infrastructure is connected on multiple grids, Head of Maintenance Dave Mintz ’87 said, which resulted in only some buildings losing power.
“They’ve just confirmed that outages in our area have been reported, and they don’t have a timeline for restoration,” Mintz said. “We’re fortunate that it happened towards the end of the school day, because obviously no power means no air conditioning. That would’ve been a tremendous source of discomfort for everybody in the community.”
The cause of the outage has not been attributed to high temperatures or excessive power demand.
If tonight’s football game continues, athletes will play without Taper Gym’s scoreboard and the locker rooms will be without power. The lights at Ted Slavin Field are still functioning for the game, Mintz said.
“They have to determine whether or not, because of health regulations, the game will be able to continue,” Mintz said. “The temperature has to fall below a certain threshold in order to safely so they have that to contend with.”
