The Harvard-Westlake Chronicle

    History of Chronicle Online

In July 2012, Volume 22 Editors-in-Chief David Lim ’13 and Elana Zeltser ’13, Volume 22 Managing Editor of Online Robbie Loeb ’13 and soon-to-be Online Developer/Designer Austin Chan ’13 met to discuss the limitations of the Chronicle’s old website at chronicle.hw.com and eventually decided to go ahead with constructing from scratch a new website for the newspaper that would be able to handle more online updates and new multimedia content.

Chan and Lim worked together over the summer to bring the current site at hwchronicle.com to life. Two months, six design prototypes later, the site officially launched October 10, 2012 with the release of the October Print Edition.

Austin Chan ’13 was the official Web Architect/Developer of the Harvard-Westlake Chronicle. He singlehandedly wrote the around 16,000 lines of code behind this website and contributed to its design.

In mid-July 2012, Chan started working on the current incarnation of the Chronicle website during his off time at a professional web app development company. After being introduced to programming in his sophomore year, he learned programming on his own.  He has since learned: Java, PHP, MySQL, Objective-C, HTML, CSS, Javascript, and español. After working for Yahoo! over the summer, Chan is now a freshman at Cornell University.

Volume 22 Editor-in-Chief David Lim ’13 worked with Chan throughout the summer of 2012 to create a website that would accommodate the modern needs of the Chronicle.  Lim’s main role in the website development was designing the visual appearance and functionality that the Chronicle needed.

Lim, who has been interested in writing since childhood, joined the Chronicle as a sophomore and was a News Section Head in his junior year. Lim will attend Stanford University as the member of the class of 2018 after taking a gap year.

Special thanks to Chronicle Adviser Kathy Neumeyer.
