Harvard-Westlake defeated the El Segundo Eagles in both teams’ first contests of the El Segundo Tournament. The Wolverines won 77-51.

The Wolverines led the entire game, starting with back-to-back three pointers from Ray Mueller ’16 and Cassius Stanley ’19 and then a layup by Carter Begel ’17 which gave the squad an early 8-0 lead.

At the end of the first quarter, the Wolverines led the Eagles 14-11 after an Ali Iken ’17 jumper, a Stanley dunk and a Wolfgang Novogratz ’16 spinning layup.

To begin the second quarter, Liam Hyde ’17 hit a three, and then on the Wolverines next possession, he hit a 15-foot jumper from the left corner to give Harvard-Westlake a 21-13 lead.

The Wolverines slowly, but surely kept extending their advantage over the Eagles, with Iken, Novogratz and Stanley leading the way. To close out the first half, Stanley hit a three pointer from NBA range at the buzzer to give Harvard-Westlake a 35-17 edge midway through the game.

The third quarter was dominated by Begel who began the second half with consecutive three point field goals. After two Iken two point buckets, Begel finished a layup in traffic, and subsequently hit his third three pointer of the half. Begel ended up scoring 17 of his 21 total points in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter saw both teams trade baskets, with Wolverines’ Head Coach David Rebibo and Eagles’ Head Coach Jason Ito deciding to empty their benches early in the final quarter. The lead was kept around 30 points in favor of Harvard-Westlake, as every player on both teams was afforded at least a few minutes of game action.

The Wolverines are on a two-game winning streak, heading into their next game Wednesday against Pacific Hills at El Segundo High School at 7:30 p.m.
