The boys’ water polo team defeated Agoura 8-5 in the first game of the Elite 8 Tournament on Thursday afternoon.
Coming off of an 8-4 loss to Mater Dei, the players said that they felt ready to play and were confident in the game plan.
The Wolverines jumped out to an early lead and were up 4-1 at the half. Agoura kept the game close until the third quarter, until Alex Bucur ’19 assisted Keller Maloney ’18 on a goal to give the Wolverines a 6-2 edge.
Goalkeeper Sam Krutonog ’18 said that, even though defense was good all-around, they should have been able to hold Agoura to less goals. For the second game in a row, Krutonog noted that the team had trouble finishing offensively.
“I still feel like 5 goals is too much to allow to Agoura, and we still definitely could have converted some more offensive opportunities,” Krutonog said. “It [our finishing] is something that we need to work on.”
Nico Tierney ’20 put the game away by giving the team an 8-5 lead with only a few minutes left off of a shot that banked in off of an Agoura defender.
The team will face off against Miramonte tomorrow at 12:30 p.m., and will move onto play Huntington Beach at 5:30 p.m. if they win.
