Boys’ water polo advances to second round of CIF

By Michael Aronson

With the season on the line, the boys’ varsity water polo team defeated JSerra 8-5 in the first round of CIF playoffs.

Captain Alec Zwaneveld ’12 led the team in scoring once again with another hat trick on the night.

The Wolverines got out to an early lead in the game and had a 5-1 lead by the half. The Cavaliers showed promise late in the third quarter after reducing the deficit to two goals, but the Wolverines’ goalie Rye Newman ’13 held JSerra to only one score in the fourth period to win the match.

“We prepared well for this game and I think we saw that in the first half,” Head Coach Brian Flacks ’06 said. “I thought that in the fourth quarter we should a lot of resilience and character like we’ve been showing all year.”

The Newport Harbor boys’ team won its first round game Wednesday, which means the Wolverines will play them in their second round game this Saturday. Former coach of Harvard-Westlake’s program, Robert Lynn, left after last season to coach for Newport Harbor, and this will be the first time Lynn will face his old team.

“Tonight we are going to enjoy the win but Thursday and Friday we are going to get as prepared as we can for Newport,” Flacks said.
