Rematch of CIF Finals ends in defeat for girls’ water polo

By Luke Holthouse

The Los Osos Grizzlies avenged their loss to the girls’ water polo team in the CIF championship game last season with a 14-13 yesterday at Los Osos. The Wolverines came into the matchup ranked as the number one team in Div. IV of the Southern Section of CIF while Los Osos was ranked as the second best team in the division.

As the Wolverines play in a different league than Los Osos, the two teams will not play again during the regular season. But based on the pre-season rankings, the two teams are expected to meet again in CIF playoffs. The Wolverines took both the regular season and post-season matchup against Los Osos and came just one goal away from taking this year’s matchup.

Before the game, first-year Head Coach Brian Flacks ’06 said that the two teams matched up very evenly. The Wolverines graduated two players from last years’ team (Ashley Grossman ’11 and Camille Hooks ’11) while Los Osos graduated one.

“Obviously, we played them in two great games last year when I wasn’t around. Hopefully, the rivalry continues and we can get the best of them a few more times,” Flacks said.

The Wolverines resume league play this Tuesday at Los Angeles Valley College against Marymount.
