Girls’ water polo advances to CIF Final after overtime win

By Luke Holthouse

Girls’ water polo will face Los Osos in CIF finals Saturday at 2 p.m. at Woolett Aquatic Center in Irvine in a rematch of last year’s game.

The CIF semifinal game against Upland Feb. 22 wasn’t the first time the girls’ water polo team had to settle a game in overtime this year. However, it was the first overtime game this season that the Wolverines would go on to win.

The Wolverines brought a 4-2 lead into the fourth quarter, but were shut out in the final period of regulation and surrendered two goals to the Highlanders.

Having lost both of their previous games that season decided in overtime, the Wolverines needed to find a way to win extra time to keep their season alive. Rebecca Armstrong ’14 gave the Wolverines a 5-4 lead early in the first overtime period and Morgan Hallock ’13 was able to seal the victory and punch the team’s ticket to its second straight CIF Final with an insurance marker later in period.

The defending Div. IV Southern Section CIF Champions will take on Los Osos in the final, in a rematch of last year’s championship game. The Wolverines beat the Grizzlies 10-7 in last year’s final to win the girls’ water polo program’s first ever CIF Championship, but Los Osos beat the Wolverines earlier this season in a regular season game by a score of 14-13.
