Baseball shuts out Ventura County, advances to CIF quarterfinals

By Camille Shooshani

Left-handed pitcher Max Fried’s ’12 3-0 complete game against Ventura County today launched the Wolverines to the second round of CIF playoffs. The team will play again tomorrow.

With 10 strikeouts, one walk and three hits, Fried dominated Ventura County’s offense. Through the first three innings, he pitched a no hitter.

In the second inning, Jack Flaherty ’14 hit a double to put the Wolverines in scoring position, ending the inning 2-0. In the third, Joe Corrigan ’13 scored after he took third on an overthrow to second.

The team struggled to score throughout the rest of the game but kept the Cougars under control. In the fourth inning, Casey Rosenfeld ’13 hit a sacrifice bunt to send Tyler Urbach ’14 to third and Michael Vokulich ’14 to second. Urbach locked himself in a pickle on the next play, and with the bases loaded the Wolverines could not score.

The Wolverines are ranked number one in the Southern Section Div. II by Max Preps and could head to CIF Finals at Dodger Stadium this spring.
