    Fried heads to AZL Padres

    By Robbie Loeb

Max Fried’s ’12 dream job began today.

The seventh pick in the MLB draft departed for Peoria, Ariz. to join the Arizona League Padres, the rookie-level team for the San Diego Padres.

The southpaw prospect is not expected to pitch much this summer, as he recovers from the high school baseball season. In his senior season with the Wolverines, Fried went 8-2 with a 2.2 ERA and 105 strikeouts, giving up 43 hits and 29 walks in 66 innings.

The former UCLA prospect agreed to terms June 15 for a deal worth $3 million.

His former teammate, Lucas Giolito remains unsigned as the Washington Nationals can only offer the no. 16 pick $3,029,773, according to a Monday report in the Washington Times.

The Nationals signed seven of their first 10 picks, leaving about $3 million to offer Giolito without exceeding the $4.4 million allotment to sign picks with. Exceeding the designated allotment by 5 percent would result in a 75 percent tax on the amount over the limit they go. Above 5 percent, penalties could increase op to a 100 percent tax and the potential forfeiture of a future first-round pick.

Giolito can still elect to go to UCLA rather than sign with the Nationals, but has until July 13 to decide.
