The boys’ and girls’ swim teams are currently undefeated after competing in two meets.
In the first meet of the season March 6, the boys defeated Crespi 97-81 and the girls defeated Marlborough 126-54. On March 8, both teams beat Chaminade, with the girls finishing 93-25 and the boys finishing 125-25.
Following the strong start, both teams hope to sustain their success through to the end of the season.
“The end goal for the boys is to beat Loyola, even though that’s a reach, “ swimmer Louis Peng ’18 said.
Swimmer Paul Leclerc ’18 said that the boys’ team is going to have a big year.
“It’s always great to start off the season well and we’re off to a super strong start,” LeClerc said. “I think we have a lot of depth this year and the team is big but still closely knit.”
On March 9, the squad hosted its fourth annual Justin Carr Friday Night Lights Classic meet in memory of Justin Carr ’14. The invitational is open to the the top swimmers from each of the participating schools including Crespi, Cleveland, Immaculate Heart, Marlborough, Notre Dame, Poly and Rowland.
The girls won the meet for the third year in a row defending against rivals Marlborough and Notre Dame. This was the first year that the boys won the invitational meet.
“It was a really great environment since there were a lot of fast teams and it’s a big deal to honor [Carr],” swimmer Eve Hookstratten ’20 said. “I think the way we swam will carry over into our next meets.”
Program Head Jason Schwarz said that he is confident in both teams to finish the season strong.
“Swimming being a team and individual sport we look for individual success and through that we get team success,” Schwarz said. “So we need to develop the athletes so they will have success when they race. From a varsity standpoint, that means qualifying kids for CIF. Teamwise, we want success at CIF, placing swimmers at the CIF finals and of course we want to compete for Mission League championships.”
Schwarz is also looking for the upperclassmen to help lead the teams to success.
“With our seniors we would like them to continue to lead the team and of course contribute to the success of our team,” Schwarz said. “We have a great group of seniors this year and we will miss this group when they graduate.”
The girls team is hoping for another league title this season and a win in the Mission League championship meet.
“We only started competing a week ago but have already got several best times, CIF cuts and almost broke a school record,” Mila Fejzo ’19 said.
