Fencing wins 7th league title

The men’s and women’s fencing team wrapped up its seventh consecutive league title after a first place showing in Saber and second place finish in Epee in the Scholastic Epee and Saber tournament last Saturday.

“We’re bringing the sword back home again,” Head Coach Ted Katzoff said.

The league championship is determined by the combined performances of the varsity A foil, epee and saber teams. The team began the season with a first place finish in varsity A foil behind senior Danny Nguyen. Nguyen helped deliver the first place finish by finishing first among all competitors and taking home the individual men’s championship. At this weekend’s tournament, the team took home first place in both men’s and women’s varsity A Saber and senior Eric Arzoian took home an individual championship.

“We’ve had great success at all levels this year,” Arzoian said. “Everyone put in a lot of effort, and our league championship is validation of how hard we worked,” he said.

The team will have a tough task in their quest for an eighth consecutive league title. Key seniors including Nguyen and Arzoian will graduate, passing on the reins to underclassmen such as highly ranked Michael Raynis ’10.

“It’s always a challenge when you lose so much talent, and we are losing some excellent seniors,” Katzoff said. “I think we’ll be able to overcome it with young players working hard. We will feel the impact, and I don’t want to predict what will happen. I can say that we will do great at some level.”
