Playoff Preview: Girls’ soccer vs. Huntington Beach

After winning the Mission League Championship for the sixth consecutive time, the girls’ soccer team is looking to make sure that they do not lose in the playoffs in a penalty kick shootout and go as far as they can.
“I think it’s been difficult for the team to deal with losing penalties only because we seem to be unable to break out of this cycle but I think we are the most prepared we have ever been this year so I think if we are put in that position we will be ready and confident in our shooters,” left winger Ariana Miles said ‘18. “We began shooting PKs a lot earlier in the season this year to make sure we would be ready.”
The first game of playoffs for the Wolverines will happen at home on Thursday against Huntington Beach.
The Huntington Beach Oilers are currently the third see in the Sunset League, with a 17-7-4 overall record.
The squad is coached by Raul Ruiz, and captained by University of Arkansas commit Rachel Harris, New Mexico State University commit Katie Martinez, Alijah Oliver and Briana Barnes.
If the team wins, it will face Esperanza or San Clemente on Feb. 21 for the second round of playoffs.
“We are all playing for each other,” center midfielder Olivia Bautista ‘19 said. “I am very excited for playoffs and we all want the team to get as far as we possibly can.”
