Wrestling had a promising first match with wrestlers placing high in each weight group.
Liam Douglass ’18 took first place 2-0 at 285 pounds, Riley Ruiz ’20 placed second 3-1 at 126 pounds and Kanoa Young ’21 took third place 3-1 at 152 pounds.
Ruiz said his high placement has made him reconsider his role on the team.
“I’ve tried to take a leadership role with the freshman and help ease them into wrestling which most of them are new to,” Ruiz said. “Wrestling isn’t like any other sport and it can be scary at first for incoming kids, but being a part of the team which is more like a family really gets you through that indecisive phase of whether or not you want to stick it out for the season.”
John Cahill ’20, the fourth place wrestler at 138 pounds said the meet set a good standard for the rest of the season.
“It’s really fun to be back wrestling with people who all have the same goals of getting better and doing well in matches,” Cahill said. “It’s really exciting to see such success from our team because it gives us a chance to win future duals.”
