Emily Greenwood stepped down as Program Head for the girls’ water polo team, according to a statement put out by the school on Friday, Sept. 13. In the team’s two seasons under Greenwood, it won consecutive Mission League titles and placed second in the CIF-SS division III playoffs. Attacker Alex Button ’21 said while she appreciates all that Greenwood has done for the program, she is excited to see how the coaching change will impact the team.
“I think that Coach Greenwood did a great job as head coach, and brought the girls program further than we’ve ever come before,” Button said. “However, change is never a bad thing. With a new set of eyes and a new perspective on the sport, we will be able to take everything we’ve learned from Emily and not only apply it to [new coach Matt] Kubeck’s coaching but add to it. Our season is looking super bright this year.”
Kubeck will fill in as the interim program head. Kubeck has been an assistant for both the boys’ and girls’ water polo teams since 2014, something Button thinks will help the adjustment.
“Matt has a great head start with us,” Button said. “He knows our team, our plays and what we need as a unit to succeed. He has amazing experience and will do great as the head coach.”
The girls’ water polo team opens their season against Bishop Alemany High School on Dec. 2.
