After winning its first game of the MaxPreps Holiday Classic on Dec. 26, the boys’ varsity basketball team defeated Seattle school Rainier Beach 75-70 Thursday to reach the semifinals of the national tournament.

Forward Derick Newton ’14 scored a season-high 31 points to lead the Wolverines past the Vikings, who are ranked 200th in the nation by MaxPreps.

The Wolverines, now at 8-2 on the season, will play fellow California school Westchester in the semifinals of the tournament on Dec. 28.
