Boys’ basketball rolls Costa Mesa in CIF Playoffs first round

Coming off its first losing regular season in over ten years, the boys’ varsity basketball team cleaned its slate as it opened the first round of CIF Playoffs with a double-digit win, defeating Costa-Mesa 64-48.
Forward Derick Newton ’14 was the Wolverines’ top scorer with 16 points in the team’s first game of the postseason.
Entering the CIF Division 4AA bracket via an at-large playoff bid, the Mission League eight-seed Wolverines will return home for their first home playoff game of the year to face Maranatha, a two-seed out of the Olympic League, in the second round. MaxPreps.com gives the Wolverines the advantage ranking-wise over the Minutemen, placing the teams at 87th and 238th in the state respectively.
