School hosts field hockey showcase

Head coaches from the University of Maryland, Johns Hopkins, Brown and Yale coached and observed field hockey players from all over the country on Ted Slavin Field Jan. 3 and 4.

The event consisted of a five-hour session each day, including drills and scrimmages.

Coaches also talked about the college recruiting process and the differences between college level games in Division I schools like the University of Maryland, Yale and Brown and Division III schools like Johns Hopkins.

“It gives people a chance to get familiar with those coaches, which is a good thing, and also be exposed to what it’s like to play at the college level early on,” field hockey player Phaedra Robinson ’17 said.

Nine Wolverine athletes participated in the event.

“This is my first year as goalie, so I decided that getting as many days when I can practice my skills and just learn new tactics of blocking the ball is going to be really helpful,” goalie Elly Choi ’18 said. “So my intentions were not trying to be recruited by a college but to just better my skills.”

Jason and Christine Reese (Brooke ’15, Bryant ’19) organized the event.

Hana Chop ’14 helped coach the first day of the camp. She currently plays field hockey for Johns Hopkins.

“These schools have started to recognize the talent out west and are looking to recruit more players from this area of the country,” Chop said in an email sent to tell players about the camp.
