Two wrestlers will continue to the second day of the Santa Ynez Tournament after a strong meet Jan. 12.
Team captain Calvin Kaleel ’18 advanced in the 132 weight class by winning four matches and losing one and Daniel Guerrero ’20 advanced in the 170 weight class by winning one match and losing one.
“I think the team can always do some improving on technique, but overall we wrestled well,” Kaleel said.
Since the tournament has a double elimination format, those wrestlers who lost two matches did not move on to the next day.
Justin Butler ’19 said that in the future, competitors need to work on their pace in matches.
“We fought hard, and out toughed some guys on the mat,” Butler said. “What we have to do to improve is work on reacting quicker and wrestling non-stop.”
Going into the next day of the tournament, Butler said that he hopes that the team’s hard work will result in success.
“Tomorrow we just want to wrestle the best that we can,” Kaleel said.
